Getting to the Archipelago

Public ferries from Stromkajen, guided boats from the centre, or Vaxholm by bus. Which to take, and why most visitors should just book a tour.

Updated August 2026

Three ways, and they suit very different trips.

1. A Guided Boat - what most visitors should take

Leaves from the central quays, handles the navigation and tells you what you are looking at. From $29 for an historic ship with fika, $40 for a classic wooden boat, or $168 for a RIB if you would rather go fast.

The archipelago is 30,000 islands. Without a plan or a guide, a first visit tends to become a long boat ride to somewhere arbitrary.

2. Public Ferries - independent and slower

Scheduled boats run from Stromkajen out to the islands. Cheaper, entirely doable, and the right choice if you have a specific island in mind and a full day.

The trap is timetables: services thin out sharply outside summer, and the return sailing is often the constraint on how long you can stay. Check the last boat before you leave, not after lunch.

3. Vaxholm by Bus or Boat - the easy half-day

Vaxholm is the archipelago’s gateway town, reachable by bus in well under an hour or by boat in around 75 minutes. It is a genuine archipelago town with a fortress and wooden houses, and it works when you do not have a full day. Guided small-group trips run around $172.

Which to Pick

  • First visit, one day - a guided tour from $29
  • First visit, half a day - Vaxholm
  • Returning, know where you are going - public ferry
  • Want speed and spray - RIB at $168
  • Want a whole day on the water - full-day sailing at $360

Timing

Most guided tours run May to September, with a reduced winter offering. The water is at its best in June and July when the light barely goes; late August and September trade some daylight for far fewer people.
